do I have to enter both symbols?

I rely on Seeking Alpha blogs to help us manage our 6 family portfolios. When we have a preferred stock, I have both the common & preferred symbols on the portfolio. Is that necessary if I want news whether it's the common or preferred? Thanks, Ron
