Financial Statements Excel download flaw

Downloading financial statements is severely limited in that download of data are not in numerical format resulting in #VALUE! displays in cells.  Accordingly, calculations cannot be made using the downloaded data thwarting analysis.  I suspect it has to do with negative values, but I'm not sure.
