Create comment order setting preference

We can now switch order of reviewing comments.  The default is to see the most recent comments first.  I can see where some readers would like that but after using it this way for a while, I would actually prefer to see oldest comments first.  There may be others like me,  If we could set our preference in settings, everyone could get what they wanted.

The new 'newest comments on the top' feature is horrible. I don't understand this decision at all. it's a real chaos and you can't even set the comments as oldest on top once and for all,you have to manually change it every time, incredible

As to comments, it is good to have the option of ordering by Oldest OR Newest. But is it possible to have Oldest as the default? On a new article, it is helpful to read the comments as they develop in order.
Perhaps SA should give its users an option for a default setting on how they would like to order their message boards. IMO, sorting by 'Newest' is counterintuitive.
Comments are displaying out of chronological order. Makes it hard to follow conversation
for the last couple of days (maybe longer) the comments following an article are in reverse order. The last one posted is the first one I see. Why?

reverse order comments

We are now remembering the last setting you made as a default.  So if you set oldest first, it will remain that way on the browser you are using.

I prefer to see the older "parents" first because that often influences the downstream comments, even if they're not the direct "children."  Not always but often.  Just saying.

There's a reason why all books in English start at the beginning and then go to the end - billions of books. No problem if someone wants to go to the end first to find out who the murderer is, but please, make the default sort order "oldest" so we can follow the plot.

They're not listening to us on this issue.

I wholeheartedly agree.  I cannot make sense of the discussion with it sorted in reverse order of time.  It is like watching a movie in reverse, or reading a book from back to front.  Therefore I am forced to override manually the default on every single article I read, every single time I revisit it.  Please, either change the default back, or at least give us an option to set our personal preference globally once and for all.

I too am annoyed to be forced to override manually the idiotic reverse ordering every single time I read the discussion in the comments.  I am annoyed every single time, multiple times per day.

If mine is set for oldest first, how do I reset it to newest first?

Simply change the drop-down at the top of the comment stream
