It isn't (wasn't) that muted users are showing up, it's that multiple attempts to mute did nothing. But in the hour or so after I left that comment I determined that attempts to mute were successful, just in an episodic (on and off) way. In other words, you could click on the "Mute user" link over and over and nothing would seem to happen. I confirmed this by refreshing my browser to see if the user I was trying to mute still showed up and they did. So I concluded something wasn't working. BUT, after doing this multiple times over the ensuing hour I noticed that sometimes it did work. So I dunno ...

My theory (!): Because there is no 'feedback' for the user who clicks on the 'Mute user' link the user trying to do the muting doesn't know it's working, causing him to click the 'Mute user' link a second time, which undoes the previous action. An example to make myself clear: YouTube. If you click on the thumbs-up or thumbs-down link of a YouTube video you get instant feedback that your action has had effect because the thumb turns from gray to blue. If you reclick on the thumb you can remove your 'vote' (so to speak) and the thumb will turn from blue back to the original gray condition. The SA 'Mute user' link gives me no feedback at all. Si I clicked it again and again in an effort to get it to respond to me. So maybe by clicking the link repeatedly in an effort to get a response from the system (that actually was responding by not telling me so via feedback) I was inadvertently turning the mute on and off and on and off and ...? I dunno.

Hope this makes sense. Sorry to be long-winded but because you were decent enough to respond to me I thought i owed you a full answer. If I'm correct about this (and I've no idea whether I am) then installing some sort of feedback for the person who tries to mute (ala the YouTube example) would fix it. But I'm an English major and no techie.

Thanks for your attention.

Pete

That's really great feedback, going forward, we will be careful to always provide feedback to the user.

Hi,

Where are you seeing muted users? Can you give a specific example?

Thanks,
