Earlier this evening the site started asking me for a new user name. I was logged in as Ken Hamermesh. I eventually created another user name, some garbage of letters and numbers. On another device I was able to get back my real user name. What gives?
I was able to revert back to my original user name on my iPhone, still shows the garbage new name on the iPad.
why was I even getting asked to change my user name?

Same here. Got the message to select new user name and when I enter the user name I've had for more than 10 years I get a message that it is taken. I've gone round and round with settings/accounts and give up. So unless I can post as anonymous I won't post anymore. Sorry for your issue, but glad I am not the only one who has it.
