Iphone app does not recognized subscriber status

I’ve subscribed and paid for Alpha Premium via PayPal but not the Apple App and the sponsored message keeps prompting for me to sign up. Even after I logout and back in - doesn’t detect my subscription. Status by email. Must we purchase via Apple Store?
