Need a way to block the commentary from certain annoying (and prolific) readers.

Certain commenters are very prolific and repetitive; responses to any counter argument is either ignored by said commenter or given an almost word-for-word repetition of a previous comment, including unsupported links to charts and other irrelevant data. This particular commenter is so prolific and so annoying that I simply no longer want to see anything from this individual, no matter what they say.

As of today, muting of users is virtually unlimited (you will be able to mute up to 300 people)

I think the way mute works is that everyone else in the world can still see the comment. Mute only removes comment for the particular user that implements that mute.  Everyone else can see the comment.  It only works for personal curation of your feed.  Doesn't impact what others see.

Exactly. The comments are still there, I just don't have to be bothered with them. Nothing to do with censorship. I would report them and perhaps have some removed but its so much easier to just mute the offending party. At one time, we were only allowed 3, now according to Jacob in the post above its 300.

Muting someone because you disagree in some way with him.  But maybe others would like to read what he has to say and wouldn't disagree?  You cut off everybody else by allowing muting.  Not a good idea i think.

Even when wrong, there are some authors who revel in berating commentators. They can even remove a comment when they please, it seems. Censorship. Can anyone MUTE anyone? Three mutes? Does that mean you have only 3 mutes a lifetime, or you can only mute a person 3 times? Does this apply to authors?

I think if you click the mute option it toggles mute.

Thanks. It seems I muted the guy yesterday when trying but did not realize it?  Anyway, problem solved for now. Thanks

Yes, I found that but It does not work probably because I used up my 3 already. Is there a way to remove prior mutes so I can mute the new one?

Since the discussion above, SA added a "Mute" feature.  Out to the right of a comment there's a dropdown arrow that gives the "mute" option.  Unless you're a paying member you only get 3 mutes, but that might help.

How can I ignore a poster I really dislike?
